Background of the study
Government institutions rely on effective interpretation services to ensure clear communication between officials and the public. In Calabar, where Efik is the dominant language, professional training for interpreters is critical to delivering accurate and culturally sensitive interpretation in public administration, legal settings, and community services (Udo, 2023). Recent initiatives have focused on specialized training programs that enhance interpreters’ proficiency in both language and technical vocabulary relevant to governmental functions. These programs incorporate practical exercises, simulations, and continuous professional development to address common challenges such as misinterpretation of technical terms and cultural idioms (Anyanwu, 2024). However, despite these efforts, inconsistencies in interpreter performance continue to be reported, affecting the quality of service delivery. This study investigates how professional training impacts the accuracy of Efik language interpretation in government institutions by examining interpreter performance data, reviewing training curricula, and collecting feedback from service users. The goal is to identify gaps in current training practices and propose improvements that ensure more reliable and effective communication in public service contexts (Udo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the implementation of professional training programs, Efik language interpretation in government institutions still exhibits inaccuracies and inconsistencies. These issues, such as misinterpretation of technical vocabulary and cultural nuances, undermine effective communication and service delivery (Anyanwu, 2024). Gaps in training and limited practical exposure contribute to these challenges, affecting public trust in governmental operations. This study seeks to identify the shortcomings of current interpreter training programs and assess their impact on interpretation accuracy, with the aim of proposing improvements to enhance communication in government settings (Udo, 2023).
